Quarterlife Mocha Girl

The Day of the Geechie is over!!! The six-week class that I dreaded is over. Time flies when you're having fun, I guess. I really enjoyed them. Men and money aren't so bad after all. Meanwhile, the roommate is offending people left and right and getting on my very last nerve. Check the conversation, post Grammy's:

Roommate: Hey, did you see that Amy Winehouse girl? What's her deal? I really like her voice, but I don't know about looking at her.
Me: Oh, she's on crack or something..
Roommate: She reminds me of someone..maybe like Lena Horne
Me: Ummm....not at all. She's a cracked out white girl from the UK
Roommate: Well, it looks like....she's....mixed? with something
Me: .................................................
Roommate: ....like AFRO-American
------------------------------------Dead silence and stares--------------------------------
Me: NO
Roommate: You don't think so?
Me: NO, absolutely not! And NO, don't EVER say Afro-American in public again. We're African American. I don't have an afro.
Roommate: Ohhh, it's so confusing, I don't know what to say.....Can I say black????

Yeah, that was a real conversation. And if you forgot, it's 2008. So you see what I have to deal with. I don't get paid to educate people about my race or culture. Figure it out! And don't ever reach in your ass pull out AFRO-American from 1978...just in time for Black History Month. It's a shame. A damn shame. Out of all the times she referred to guys as black this, black that, Hispanic that, Afro-American is the term she used.

What the hell is that??

I immediately googled that term and found that Rev. Jessee Jackson made the term popular. He doesn't even have a damn afro anymore. Everyone is Africa doesn't have an afro, so please, someone tell me how this term was ever affectionately used? It's not an insult, but it doesn't apply. Then again, African American doesn't either. I'm from right here in America.

Speaking of black folks, I was watching School Daze last night. Yes, I was acting out "I Don't Wanna Be Alone Tonight," dance moves and all! I LOVED college. I wouldn't trade it for the world. The pledging, hanging out at the union, parties, parties, parties, crushes (wack) dates, student life....Damn, I really miss it. HBCU college life, can't beat it.

I went to an Erykah Badu listening party on Monday and won four Grizzlies vs. Suns tix. I gave them to my cousin and he, his brother, cousin and my uncle went. Whatever I can do to make someone else happy. I rather watch Making the Band than see Shaq. Sorry.

This Sunday, a friend from college, who happens to live an hour away came to my church. We walked in together. So it looked like we're together. Let me tell you, bringing someone to church is a big deal to me. Granted, he is nice-looking and was looking rather hot in that 3-pc suit, it's not like that. Atleast not right now. I had to run for cover because of everyone (including Mama) asking who my "Friend" was. I don't think it's like that. But we shall see. It's time to start dating again.

It's time for me to forget about That One, even though I'm not ready. At the very least he admitted that he was mad at me for not calling to tell him I was coming to N.O. Hence, us not "seeing" each other. I can't lie, he's hard for me to shake. I finally told him some of the things I wanted to get off my chest for some time. But I didn't tell him everything. This thing we have is the craziest I've ever seen.

In other men news, ironically I have a story assignment to profile the Nomad's job. After seeing him on NYE, it was awkward. I didn't want any physical contact with him. He asked me to spend NYE with him and I declined. Where's the GF? Don't really have one. What is "don't really"? I never called him back....until last night. Now I see how I attract people who are gone with the wind. Because I'm the same way. Anywho, I called to get some info and I did want to see how he was doing, so..the convo was dry. He said it was nice to hear from me and we hung up.

When I called, however, I called from my home phone. He called back and I saw the registered name/owner. Let's just say, it was the GF's name. So I guess as long as he has a phone under her name and she's paying the bill, they're together. What do you think?

Off Hiatus

I know, I know...it's been two weeks. But time flies when you're having fun. Or something like that. I have been on an emotional roller coaster and you know how I am with my emotions. I don't want to talk about it. I'm tired of talking about it with myself (in my head, of course!) and with friends. Last night I did what I should have done in the first place: prayed to God and left it there. No one knows what's best for me, but Him. So there it is.

Had a pretty good time in the N.O. for All-Star. I love my linesisters. Of course, any event in the state of Louisiana turns into a Southern University reunion. I guess it's to be expected, but don't I see ya'll all the time? It sure feels like it. I'm sure they feel the same way about me.

Not many celebrity sitings. Um, unless you count Rick Ross coming out of Sweet Fire & Ice with a doggy bag, Kim Kardashian's (short) sisters in the elevator at the W Hotel (looking a mess, might I add!) and Mr. "Gitcho Hand Outta My Pocket" aka Micheal from Waiting to Exhale aka Bunk from The Wire, Wendell Pierce (N.O. native) coming out of Harrah's. Nevertheless, it still went down....

The firepit at Sweet Fire & Ice...shoutout to that Jambalaya Pasta and Peach Martini!

Chillin at the W Hotel
At Harrah's

All in all, it was fun. I needed that little excursion Next up, Heart of the City tour for my bday in ATL!

The Grammy's

What up?

I have a lot to say, but of course, I'll break it up into several posts. Since it's Monday morning (already), I'll go light. Um, the Grammy's? Pretty good, don't you think. You had the very crackish Amy Winehouse looking a FOOL, as usual. Must we hit the pipe right before going on stage? Those legs look like toothpicks waiting to break.

Usher....yeah, your new song is hot, but that look on the Grammy's...No sir. Don't ever just put a printed shirt on (untucked) and throw a tight-ass tuxedo jacket on over it. You could do so much better. I hope that look doesn't catch on.

I missed Prince and Rihanna, but I heard they had the same hairstyle. And how tall is Rihanna? She's towering over other celebs on the gossip site pics.

Tina and Bey. Tina can still work it out I see. Bey is turning into Mama Tina everyday. Wow.

The "rap it up" symphony music during Kanye's speech was hilarious to me, even though it shouldn't have been. I don't blame them. You never know what's gonna come out of his mouth. Wonderful tribute to Mama. BUT he looked a FOOL, as well. Sorry Ye', I can't give you a fashion plate pass on this one. The glow-in-the-dark blinder shades? Killin' me foreal.

And I really wanted him to win Album of the Year. I didn't even know Herbie Hancock still made music. I need to get my game up. And the Herbster had no apologies for winning either.

For more laughs on pure tomfoolery, please check out YBF for pics. And Crunk and Disorderly, too.

Last, but not least. For you who don't know, Mary J. and Jay-Z are touring together starting next month in the "Heart of the City" Tour. I'm TOO excited!! Wherever it is, I'm so there.

Happy Monday!

So...a lot has gone on in just a few days. First off, a tornado hit the M. I had no damage, no bad news. Myself and my famiy are A-Ok. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for others. Praying for them.

I'm about to melt down because of all of these classes, church involvement (a whole 'nother story!) and writing. Right now, I'm sitting on two assignments. Both are due tomorrow. But atleast, I have tomorrow off.

The tornado touched down Super Tuesday night. Instead of sitting in the hallway, I was in the back bedroom, with CNN on lock. Barack has so much momentum right now. It's so damn exciting!! Hillary has given 5 million of her own money, when Obama has raised 7.3 million after Super Tuesday. What is happening in this country right now is almost unbelievable. People really DO want change. Oh, and damn TN for not voting majority for him. But atleast my county did!

I have never been interested in politics, though I've always voted. There is really a movement going on. I've been up on Barack since he made his speech at the Congressional Rally. He is something else. Let's not forget about Michelle! I am so hopeful for them. Can you imagine what kind of impact seeing your own in the White House will do for our families? Not just our families, but everyone.

I won't bore you with the Yes We Can video. I think everyone has received that forward. Instead, there's a video of Mrs. Obama that I love.

Be Not Afraid

So, this is what a writer goes through, I guess. Then again, maybe not. I HAD a deadline for a story at noon today. As of 1:50 p.m., two phone calls, two messages and an email later, I have not spoken to my contact for this story. It's driving me. But it's okay.

It's Friday and I'm going to the beauty shop today to "get my hair did." I hate that, by the way!

Back when going out was my specialty, I knew a lot about makeup. I've never been the type to spend my entire check on MAC, but I atleast knew how to apply it, what looks good on me, etc. Now, you'd think since I frequent all of these blogs and magazines, I'd been obsessed with makeup. Not so. For some reason, spending my money on makeup is pointless to me. Besides a GOOD, never-fails lipgloss, that is. (I just bought mint and hot chocolate glosses from VS and I love them!)I'd rather save it or spend it on clothes. You say tomato, I say tomAto. Whatever.

However, on my daily trip to the Walgreens right behind my job, I had a new way of thinking. I wanted to buy every kind of makeup I saw! Because I'm still on a budget, I opted for a bronzer, my trusty Palmer's Cocoa Butter Cream (I know it's not makeup) and some black nail polish. I've been wondering if it will look as hot and "retro" on me as it does on everybody else.

Speaking of blogs and mags, check out the February issue of Clutch. I contributed a piece about alternatives to being single on Valentine's Day. Unless my dream man drops down from the sky by the 14th, I'll pretty much be single. I'll be honest and say of the things I suggested in the story, I probably won't do any of them except one. Why, you ask? Because I hae to work that night AND I'll be packing and resting for my trip to NBA ALL-STAR in NEW ORLEANS. Okay, I'm a little too excited, right?

I'm going to hang out---I could care less about basketball or the celebrities. I would love to the see the dunk contest though. I'm going for the streets (Bourbon & Canal), the food, the daiquiries (Mango Mango) and my friends! I SO need this mini-vaction. It's been a non-eventful, semi-stressful latter '07 and '08. I work hard, so I need to play, too!

Because I missed Bayou Classic and will miss Mardi Gras (don't really want to go), this is the perfect time for me. I have been craving crawfish fettucine and cream cheese King Cake! Don't know what King Cake is? Shame on you! This weekend, I plan to hang out a little and my LS's and I are going to have our own little Mardi Gras celebration.

Have fun, live life and be safe this weekend!
